Lily Burton, PhD

Hello! I am an early career science writer and journalist with a background in science research. My work has appeared in Science News, Astronomy, and on NPR’s Here & Now. In 2024 I was a AAAS Mass Media Fellow at WUNC–North Carolina Public Radio, where I reported on a new dinosaur discovery, a citizen science project to measure air quality using spider webs, TikTok trends in reproductive health, and more.

I recently completed a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the University of Chicago, studying circadian rhythms in the metabolism of photosynthetic bacteria.

My training as a scientist gave me the tools to understand the world, all the way down to the molecular level. Through writing, I hope to share that understanding through stories that empower others to better understand their world, themselves and each other.
