Lily Burton, PhD

Hello! I am an early career science writer and journalist. I recently completed a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the University of Chicago, studying circadian rhythms in the metabolism of photosynthetic bacteria. In 2024 I was a AAAS Mass Media Fellow at WUNC–North Carolina Public Radio, where I reported on a new dinosaur discovery, a citizen science project to measure air quality using spider webs, TikTok trends in reproductive health, and more. My work has also appeared in Astronomy and on NPR’s Here & Now.

My training as a scientist has empowered me to understand the world around me, all the way down to the molecular level. I aim to write stories that both entertain and empower others with such understanding of the world, themselves, and each other.
